Removing Control Knobs - How to?

How do you safely, without destroying, remove the AC/Heater control knobs from the panel? I tried giving them a good yank, and they won't come off. They swivel/rock in place.

My new cars, you barely pull and they come off.

If anything like the controls on my Dart, see if there is an allen headed set screw underneath the knobs.

There may be an allen head under neath, but if they are like my 73 knobs they are just a pressure press-on. There is a little piece of metal inside that simply keeps pressure on the metal handle. Over time they just fuse. If you can get a small very thin screwdriver in the back they will slide off.
