Oh, I know it's possible. I just question the value of it. For example, the car I linked to above on ebay, a 70 RR, 440/6, 4 speed. The listing claims there is $170k invested in the restoration of the car. Who in his right mind puts that kind of money in a car that on a good day can maybe get half that? Unless, he has money to burn. I'm not in that league so find it hard to relate to.

I guess it depends on the history of the car. If mine wasn't my old mans, and then mine for the past 40 years I certainly wouldn't have what I do in my restoration. Guys are thinking paint should be less than $10k, hell it cost me $5K to have my chrome redone and the stainless polished!

Your situation is different, same as Justin's. You have an emotional attachment to the cars and you guys will NEVER sell them. The ebay guy had the car for 20 years, spent $170k to restore it, then decided to sell it. That's nuts !!!!

Sadly, there's no guarantee our offspring will cherish the cars as we do. On a happier note, the person who buys it from them, if they do sell, would more than likely take better care of their investment having had to pay for it.

I'm planning on it. Saved and invested my money and planning on using the returns as fun money for the car, while still keeping the original principle to generate more returns.

Exactly ! He has no attachment to this car, other than sitting around it at car shows in the '90's. His Father / Son car is sitting beside the hangar, along with a spare I picked up for parts. My 1990 TBird Super Coupe that I bought new and gave him back in 2000. Not sure it will ever be resurrected or worth the effort. But he wouldn't let me send them to the scrappers last year...

You never know how the loss of a parent can effect the way they view Dad's old car(s).

I think those that spend that kind of money on a rebuild, restoration have a business interest of some sort, be it design, fabrication or just the recognition of high level awards or accolades.
Roy had over $350k in his Nova (Great 8 Car & Riddler contender)...I heard he sold it for $150-175k.......people keep coming to his shop to have him build their cars.

I've never be able to ascertain if that was actual cost or how much sponsor donations (equipment/products) figured in to it...

I recently did a repaint in my garage
I won't be doing anytime soon again

                  before

after never mind the date stamps it was done
well sort of anyway, Nov 29 2017

out in the sun before any cut & buff
                  I had to see it
                  68 RR LL1 10-29-2017 #3 PS rear.JPG

it has LL1 Surf Turquoise Metallic color,
base coat, clear coat, 3 of each
that's the best thing that I can say, the color was good...
I had about $800 in paint materials acrylic lacquer
                  another couple hundred in supplies
lots of time sanding & sanding some more
it's certainly not a show quality paint job,
it looks like a garage paint job
but it looks better than it did, especially for a driver

                  unfortunately;
I'm a little embossed & I lost my touch :poke:
                  poor lighting too
that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it
I had issues come up later "in the sealer coat" we think
maybe some 6 months later I started to noticed
almost spider-web type cracking, under the color in a few places
or also looks like the primer shrunk, if that makes any sense
(me & a painter buddy I had come look at it, guessed/determined, when the issues showed up)
If I had paid someone else, I'd be pissed :soapbox: & they'd have to fix it...
But, I have only me to blame...
                  Oh well, such is life...

I "guess" I just have a good base "for a good paint job later"
                  I enjoy driving it still
still get the thumbs up from everyone
                  but it's a real 20 footer

did this one for about $6k, 68 CJ5 frame off
                  with my neighbor

And then, you have 3 kids with a knowledge of my car(original owner); but they all like, (shudder) the Stangs. They love my Bee for the history, so it’s going to my grandkids. Times change and you can’t account for it!

Many people. Primary reason I have the car I have. People get in over their head and sell car for $.50 on the dollar.

Yeah, could get a pretty flat lay out with it,,,the bad side was being such high solids, if it ran, sagged, curtained, it would get milky & the milk wouldn't sand out.
