Winter Project - ‘69 GTX Engine Compartment Rehab

Imron is very tough paint,and being black it will clean up better than the go mango orange did. My car needed a refresh.
 
I had to work until 3 today, but I’ll still get a few hours in before dinner. I got the strut rods and sway bar off the K frame, the only front suspension pieces left on the car are the upper control arms. They can stay in place until the engine comes out. I just finished replacing the factory sway bar bushings with Energy Suspension poly bushings. After struggling for a while, I drilled through the bushing and pried it out using the resulting hole. Sliding it to the end where the sway bar tapers down gave plenty of room for it to slide out. I reversed the process to install the new ones and squeezed them with channel locks. It was way easier than I anticipated. After a little cleanup, the sway bar will be painted gloss black…

More parts, oil pump seals and gaskets, fuel pump and t-stat gasket, Remflex header gaskets, Milodon windage tray and a pair of pan gaskets, timing cover set.

Today I’ll be prepping and painting some front end parts as well as cleaning up some others. Then I can stash them away and free up a little room in the garage.

Got the sway bar, shocks and t-bars painted. I also cleaned and painted the lower ball joints, but the matte nickel dried a lot lighter than the color on the cap. I’ll have to find some cast blast and give them another coat.

Tie rod ends cleaned and prepped, including running a retreading die over all of the threads.

I also prepped and shot the center link. These parts as well as the lower ball joints are painted with Duplicolor cast coat iron, a ceramic engine enamel.

Talked to the powder coater today, he quoted about $600 to blast and coat my parts. He said it usually slows down in January so he can turn everything around in 2 weeks.
 
Tonight’s project, prep and paint the spindles. In between coats I assembled the tie rods and cleaned up the caliper brackets. I also threw a bunch of hardware in a tumbler to see if it will work for cleaning up small parts.

Got my alternator back today. New bearings, brushes and a couple of new diodes. One more piece of the puzzle ready to go…

Currently messing around with plug wire routing. The GTX has never had the bracket on the thermostat housing. I purchased one years ago and promptly lost it. Tonight I was looking for something else, and there it was. It needed only minor modification to accommodate the 8mm wires, now it’s good to go.

Does anyone know if the plastic portion was painted or

I tore apart the distributor to clean, inspect and service the internals. The tan cap is probably the last remaining NIB Accel #120403 distributor cap on the planet. The old one will go back in the box for a spare.
