wiw '79 Monza spyder

Half a notch above a Yugo. Weld on door hinges so if the doors are sagging, well good luck. Really weak frames rails and front suspension. To say that they are a decent car is beyond me.
Exactly that.
ive seen more than a few of these cars and they arent strong at all in the body/suspension department.
one of my friends david put a Strong 350 in his coupe version took it out on the street and stood on it.
the front end came right up went back down bounced once except....
one side didnt go all the way back down and his windshield cracked immediately.
twisted the entire front end of the car.
completely wasted car,and it Was a nice car too.
i was standing less than 20 feet away when it happened and was blown away.

to the OP
if you do get the car cheap, think SubFrame connectors for Sure.
and ps,im next door to you in western ny and i could use those sidepipes for a project....lmk.

We have a 64 corvair turbo spyder hard top. :D

I have a somewhat rusty '63 convertible with a redone motor (not turbo). Runs very nice, still has the generator. Let me know if you need anything.

What would you guys pay for a 1979 Monza spyder running driving car?
factory 305 4 speed window louvers side pipes 3 owners daily driver type car.
I don't really need another car but its growing on me kinda a neat car.

Are you selling it?? If its cheap let me know, I'm looking for some where to put a decent 350 i'd like to put to use.

I am thinking abou buying it. Owner wants 2200 and my honda xr dirtbike.

meh seems a bit high...esp you throwing in the dirtbike too.
id offer him 2 grand tops if i was in Love with the car Maybe.
and id have to hear it run drive it and all that too.
and i still wouldnt be impressed for 2500 plus.

if hes hooked on your bike id lowball him at a grand plus the bike and Maybe settle for 1500 plus the bike, depends what You think the bikes worth?

agree drop wheels, side pipes and those side stripes

Ok, let me go back... way back... way back to the 70's when I worked on these cars. Hmmm .. Monza. Not the Corvair monza of the prior decade. Oh, yeah... square headlamps. Junk. Then.. And now. Just my worthless opinion.

IIRC they are a PITA to change plugs on. Probably not any worse than some Mopars I have owned.

First car I remember having to unbolt the motor mounts & raise the engine to get the plugs out....

That's okay, the Chevette you had to pull the steering column in order to replace the starter....

And lets not forget... On a quiet night you can hear the Vega rusting...

Lets not forget the Caddy Northstar and Olds Aroura had to pull the intake to change the starter. Dont miss them days.

I had an 81 Spider V6 4 spd. My brother bought it new. I gave him 600 for it, drove the hell out of it and then sold it for 600. They are real piece of ****, disposable car. I wouldn't pay over a grand for a nice one.

Can't get any better advice than that.

Back in 1978 our office manager had one for her demo. Being a Buick dealer, it was a Skylark. Since I was the warranty guy I got to deal with all kinds of fun stuff on those cars. Lots of body flex when driven enthusiastically, as well as tires that squealed a lot but seemed to be engineered to slide around corners. They were really cool on paper, but in the real world no fun to drive for more than 20 minutes.

I bought one new and they were junk!! GM should have been sued for building and selling that toad, period.

I’ve owned several. Bought a new one in 79. 305/4 speed. Bought a 76 in 82. Autocrossed it for almost 15 years. Toward the end of my ownership I hillclimbed and road raced. Had several engines, 305, 327, too 350s. If you want to compete you must tie the unibody together. Subframe connectors and roll cage. Art Morrison beefed up my chassis

Use to be a business in SoCal called DOBI, sold a lot of parts for Monzas and V8 Vegas. Just checked, they are still in business

I saw a Vega once, where they were using the previous years license plates (remember when you got new ones every year?) and they stuffed them in the hole across where the roof was rusting all the way across the top of the windshield. I was like "never seen no sh*t like that before"!!

Friend had a 4 cyl 4 speed vega wagon

another a 267 v8 auto olds starfire

both fun cars

any more HP requires at least frame connectors or you will break the windshield.
that conversion and that result was fairly common where I grew up

typical 70's gm heavy doors, weak hinges and brittle door handles

that was back before gm (and the other US makers) figured out a car could be that size and not super cramped on the inside

When my Mirage was still under Warranty I found out that GM was not sending 305 replacement motors, they were sending 350's so I sat in a parking lot with my foot to the floor trying to grenade it. It wouldn't blow. Also learned to do "Bat turns" in it. 40 MPH and then yank the e-brake and crank the steering wheel to spin it around. Abused that car!
