Hawk-Rod: The Restoration

Thanks guys. I have had a "bump" in the road with some family stuff, so it is nice to get back on this.

My car will be FAR from a concourse restoration - far from the level of what Propwash, 68Chicken or some others have done, but it will be mine, it will be a driver, and I will have a sh*ty grin pasted on my face every time I drive it! It will hopefully be nice enough to not have to hang my head if I take it places or put it in a show. It might not be a winner, but it won't be the bottom of the pack either.

The main thing is I enjoy the pi$$ out of this and have fun doing it - so it is all good! :hello2:

Now out to the garage to work instead of talk about it!

Hawk

P.S. And THANKS to all of you on the forum for all the help and motivation too! Couldn't so it without you! :headbang:

Somehow I think your downplaying your car bit but regardless building it to enjoy is always the best approach.

I could not agree more with the attitude. I always say whats the point of having it if your not going to drive it. I am building mine to drive.

striving for perfection on my end......... mock up is now complete, wanted to get the "door to quarter" and "door to fender" gaps near perfect at this stage....... a little massage and a skim coat of filler does wonders...... in my opinion, this is where the game is won...... time to break it down, flip it over, and get to some paint work

Hawk...... you gonna have one heck of a "driver" :icon_sunny:

LOL - I hope you are right. My painting skills still suck, but that's why I am only painting stuff like suspension parts!

Speaking of painting: Here is one of my favorite pictures Mark sent me today!!! The lime bandit is on its way back!!!

You scared me with that Dart pic "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh where's the Green" thought it was his car for a split second. That's one bright green "Me Likey", any other colors going on it like Black or Flat black (sorry if you already mentioned, I'm late to the game).

i assume we are putting the flat black on the center of the hood.... it was still there hiding under the yellow repaint...... Hawk's call

The Dart will be pretty nice too - I'm looking forward to that. Notice that there are TWO 70 Road Runners at Apex, so I am sure Mark and the guys are seeing double when they go home at the end of the day! Funny thing is, the other is supposed to be Lemon Twist, which is the color that mine WAS painted when I bought it. The original color of my car was Limelight, and that is what it will be wearing soon again.

747: to answer your question on paint - it will be painted with the factory hood "organisol" style hood treatment, and will have the black decal on the trunk along with the running birds on the side. I am 90% sure I will have the dust trails too. If anyone has opinions on them, I am glad to listen!
The roof will remain as it was - meaning no vinyl roof - just green.

I am getting really excited as the body is getting closer!!!

That's really come along way since I checked in last. Looking good.

It's about time you're getting to yours. Post some pictures. I really want to see that.

P.S. The fix on my car is holding great. I've been beating the hell out of it at the track and I can't break it,
Thanks again

Sounds good, I always thought the really bright colors look even better when broken up a bit like your doing. Can't wait to see it.

Totally agree. When the 73 was first painted yellow, I though something was wrong - it looked horrible. But once the black stripes got on it I thought it looked super. I really don't think I would like the Limelight as much if it were just all that color. As you said, the bright colors need something to offset them.

Got some more pictures from Mark - the car is on the rotisserie to get the undercarriage cleaned up and painted. I am getting really stoked to see this thing in one color - it is getting closer!!!

IMG_2460.jpg

Notice the original Limelight peeking out from the inner wheel wells!

IMG_2462.jpg

Notice the body stiffening bits here: Subframe connectors, torque boxes, and inner fender bracing. What you can't see in this picture is the lower radiator support bracing that stiffens that up - it is too much in shadow but in the previous post with the "twin" Road Runners you can see a good clear shot of it...

Fail!!!

OK, I hereby submit below as to why:
(a) I hate painting
(b) Why I suck at painting.

Per my understanding, the drums on the rear axle are supposed to be red. OK. Great. So I am not so worried about the paint on the drums being the concourse correct color, so I pick up some Rustoleum spray bomb red at my local home store. When I paint the drums - WOW is it ever bright. WTF, then I see this tiny label on the lid and it says "Safety Red"

Here is what it looked like (sorry, I should have rotated the picture but you'll get the idea):
IMG_2466.jpg

So I read the can and it states "fully dry in 24 hours". So I wait about 48 hours and I paint over top with some old paint I had laying around that was more of a burgundy color. I figured that would tone it down some. Something in the paint must have reacted and not been compatible, because I ended up with a crinkle finish!
Crap, at this point I need to work on other stuff. The ^%$#! drums will have to remain crinkle finish until I get a chance in the future to strip and paint them again....:angryfire:
IMG_2517.jpg

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I know your frustration but it doesn't mean you suck at painting it means the paints weren't compatable.

Something like this, if you really want to change it i would use regular paint stripper, nice an thick and i cant see why it would hurt and it would take it off in short order, clean it up real good and back to ready for paint! Don't judge yourself to hard, i could start a 10 page thread on my not thinking straight and just getting in a hurry to finish things, and no, ill pass on really doing it, when i think of them i get mad! lol.

This might help also, here is how the factory painted them (note # 6).
From what I know, the red was done with a brush and usually not very well done either.
