What The Hell! Now WHAT! oil pressure

Started my 69 RR 383 and had no oil pressure! Check everything and then tried starting car and it won't stay running and runs like ****. I think my oil pump went so I removed the oil filter and there is hardly any oil in it. I turn the engine over (coil disconnected) and no oil is flowing! Does this mean my oil pump has gone? Damn, I fix one thing and another goes, I can't keep up!

Assume you have oil in it.
Start with how the oil pump works. Pull the distributor, and look at the drive gear under it. That drive gear/shaft works off the cam gear, and turns both the oil pump, and distributor.
The lower end of the shaft is a hex, that fits into the oil pump. Maybe it broke, maybe the gear on the shaft itself slipped. Use a large flat head screwdriver, end into the slot on the top side. Twist it, to slip the gear/shaft up, so it can be pulled out, and look it over.

Busted part under the car...still thinking on that one. Look around the trans, for any signs.

Thanks, I'll do that right now! Also, its a brand new distributor, put it in a couple of days ago. The oil is full.

I agree with the above I just want to add that you need to mark or remember exactly how or where gear is in there. A notch off one way or the other can also ruin your day.
 
how was the car running after the brand new distributor went in? Did you install it the same way as the old distributor replaced? Are you a tooth or two off on the distributor gear?

Thanks for your help Miller. I tried what you suggested and turned the gear with a screw driver and I couldn't turn it or get that piece out. I think I am going to have to remove the oil pan and check it that way...Maybe its time to put a new oil pump in.
 
how was the car running after the brand new distributor went in? Did you install it the same way as the old distributor replaced? Are you a tooth or two off on the distributor gear?

It ran great! Maybe something went wrong with the oil pump, got jammed or something and put it a tooth off. The more I think about it the more I think its the oil pump.
 
I would spin oil pump with a drill to see if oil is pushing to heads. also, make sure all pushrods are in proper placement. If one of the rocker screws lossened and lifter popped out of galley? You will lose all oil pressure. And of course engine not happy. You mentioned new distributor? It may be losing contact to oil pump.

Unfortunately, no oil pressure can be a number of diffrent issues. Including just bad luck and the pump went.
 
I would spin oil pump with a drill to see if oil is pushing to heads. also, make sure all pushrods are in proper placement. If one of the rocker screws lossened and lifter popped out of galley? You will lose all oil pressure. And of course engine not happy. You mentioned new distributor? It may be losing contact to oil pump.

Unfortunately, no oil pressure can be a number of diffrent issues. Including just bad luck and the pump went.

Can't spin it with a drill on a 383, its not set up like a chevy. At least I don't think you can.

Nooo. Unless the oil pump is flat wore out...(those pumps are pretty stout.)
I have used several 'old' oil pumps, after cleaning, and checking clearances.

Getting the drive gear out...the cam/drive gears are angled. You should be able to rotate it, by the spiraled gears, to slip it up. Or, use some kind of pry bar, to get under the shaft gear, and get it out!

IF the drive gear/shaft is okay, other place to look is the pick up tube, inside the pan.
Note the direction the top slot, for the distributor tag faces, so when you go back in, you can match it.

On your distributor, look at the points contacts...ANY signs of burning=bad condenser.

OK guys, on my other thread about the piece I found, it looks like its from the starter, One of the times I tried starting it I got some kick back which looks like it broke it. This may have something to do with the oil pump? Maybe it jammed making the gear skip a tooth which caused it to run like **** and hard starting breaking that piece off. I'm far from a guru and don't know that much but its looking like a bad oil pump? what do you guys think?

Miller was right!! I got it out. The part that turns the oil pump broke off! How could this happen? Does this mean the oil pump is jammed? Do I need a new one? What is the part called that turns the pump and distributor so I can order a new one?

Just a wild un-educated guess...from the starter kick-back you mentioned.
Pump should be fine. Use a long reach magnet, to pull the broken part of the hex shaft out.

Try a distributor drive gear.

Burning in the distributor? Not what I said. Spread the points contacts themselves, and look at the surfaces.
Someone else, on the site, with a 'new' distributor, had a screwed up condenser, within a week! Always look at the points!!

To spin the oil pump the distributor gear has to come out (any Mopar V8). If he cannot get it out, with the information provided by Miller it could be jammed, broken, or twisted in a bind. Another thing a 440 distributor will not even seat in a 383

Well, I took a look at the distributor and the points, on the surface that doesn't move there is a black spot in the middle, does that mean its burnt? I already pulled out the broken part with a magnet.
