Looking at buying this 6.1 for my 64. Although I’ll be doing most of the work, I’m not an engine guy as far as tearing down and building motors. This motor has 50K on it and was taken apart after it’s donor car was wrecked. Main question is, do these pistons look about right for 50K miles? Looks like just light carbon buildup, but always open to opinions.

Motor has been back together and I’ll do a compression test if I do decide to look at it. Thanks in advance for your input.

Why does the seller tear apart the engine? There's no need to do that unless there's an obvious damage, 50 k miles in a modern engine is practically nothing, looks like a lot of carbon deposit in piston # 1, also would be nice to see inside the cylinders and the whole rotating assembly ( crank shaft bearing rods ) at least odd to me why they disassemble that engine unless of course for the sake of the new owner they just change piston rings, seals and rods.

Exactly my question, why was the engine torn down after removal? It doesn't make sense to me. What was done on reassembly? Personally I'm scared of this story. I would have to know a lot more. I would come closer to rolling the dice for a 50K mile pull out, than one that was pulled out torn apart and reassembled.

I agree. Thought it was kind of odd. I don’t know what the car looked like after the crash. He said he tore down to check the block for cracks. The reassembled motor looks really clean.

I just missed out on a 74K pullout. Found another with 132K but I’m not looking to do a rebuild right now

Often those wrecked vehicle pullout engines get damaged in the wreck, possibly the block or crankshaft was damaged....

Second look and I'd venture the crank got replaced

A compression test can tell you if the block has cracks, most likely to me that's why they rebuild the engine, sad but if I were you I'll look for another engine, this hole thing smell bad.

I don't buy pull outs from individuals on late model stuff. I shop salvage yards that deliver, guarantee, and provide some kind of labor policy in case of failure. Worst case leave off the labor policy if the price is reasonable enough. If I'm looking for a Gen III Hemi for a project I know of a Mopar only salvage yard about 80 miles north of me. They deliver, guarantee, and are not out of line on price. Sometimes prices are as good or better than I see individuals asking. If I were looking for a 6.1 Hemi, I would call see if they have one, and if not I can have them call me when one comes available or call some other yards that I know of.
I agree with @1 Wild R/T on damage in the accident, as those enginee usually come to a sudden halt. Physical damage is usually easily seen, internal damage is another story. That's why a warranty is needed.

As mentioned, why tear the engine apart.
But, what is the price? A few hundred, sure, but $4,000 nope.
What all comes with the engine, all the electronics and wiring harness, exhaust manifolds, accessories and drive assembly?

Just the motor for that price. Definitely on the higher end. I think the guy is basing it off of the lower mileage. Agree with all of you. Weird to tear down a wrecked motor. Going to pass on this one. Thank you all for the input!

FWIW, I picked up a 6.1L takeout with NAG1 trans, with engine wiring harness, computer, manifolds, and accessory drive assembly from a LQK Pick-a-part for $4,000. I think it was around 80,000 miles from a wrecked 2008 Magnum RT. It was advertised on E-Bay for a higher price, but had the make an offer, so I did and they accepted it. There was some damage when I got it. Looked like shipping damage, with a banged up transmission pan, and a chip taken out of the P/S pulley.

Took a quick look on Ebag and here is 132,000 mile one around that price, with the "make an offer". You can offer something your good with and see if they accept it. Says lift out but confirm what all comes with it.

No reason to tear it apart, my 6.1 has 160k miles and still runs as strong as the day I got it

If you think the price is right, get it. Have the crank polished, pistons bead blasted, rods checked, ball hone the cylinders and then all cleaned. New bearings, rings, lifters, have the heads gone through and slap that pig back together.
