People always asking to buy my car.

You have to careful when giving your “I don’t want to sell it” price. I had a guy follow me home after a show and started counting out $100 bills. LOL.

Had a guy follow my wife home in her 73 Challenger because he 'wanted to buy it' and well, it ended with a gun being pulled. He was nuts and followed her to the house but she called me first saying what was going on. I had the shop door open so she could just drive in (my drive is over 100' long) and he followed her right on into the driveway but he was stopped just after he entered off the street and was almost foaming at the mouth about wanting the car. My wife was pretty shook up and I intended to be the intimidator in the situation and was. That was the worse one. He threatened to call the cops when he saw the .44 and well, told him to go ahead. You're on my property and.......he left. No cops ever showed up.

I'd hardly consider it a problem to utter "no" even if I have to repeat myself three times. A smile and short answer is a good way of dealing with nearly everything.

Sold my 65 Impala SS to a guy that walked up at a car show and asked if it was for sale. I said, " Sure, what are you offering?" " $30,500." " Show me the cash." He did and we made the deal. I spent just over 21,000 to get it to where it was, It was a good deal..watched him drive away from the show in it. Bill of sale copy on the seat beside him. Said he had always wanted a 65 SS with a 454 in it. Could never find one, only 396's. My lucky day.

I've sold lots of cars and most of them were projects. Some paid more than I thought they were worth but when someone goes about it the wrong way is when I get on the defensive. My skin is pretty thick and put up with a lot but there's always the ones that seem to think they are 'speeeecial'. Man, I got more stories LOL but maybe for another time.

My reply generally was , " Sir, have you ever driven any car with north of 500HP? It's not for daily driving, it's horrible on gas mileage, it requires constant tinkering and adjusting to keep running right, if you screw up and trash the engine alone your looking at three grand just to replace it. One rear tire is $350 bucks. Still interested?" Usually common sense overtakes the lust to acquire a cool car.

There's guys out there that for some reason simply wont back down from a NO answer. It's like a fight they simply have to win or something, ego driven...especially when there's a crowd watching and listening...

At the end of the day, the older I get, the more everything I own can be bought. How much is the question.
Yep & it better be "high" market value + some

I say sure I'll sell it but my uncle Walter died in it and it was a few weeks before we found him. You get use to the smell after a while.

I bought my coronet at a car show, it wasn't for sale.

I get a lot more People that ask what's it worth, rather than is it for sale.

Well, it happens quite a lot...two and a half years ago I got a call while at work - asking if I still had my GTX and if it was for sale. I replied with the usual "Everything is for sale at a price" - as mentioned by others here. It's about that point where 99% of prospective buyers turn out to be nothing more than big-talking Wannabe's....or flippers wanting your car for nothing.

For a change, I was met with the response..."Name that price"...so I did...and I said not one dollar less. I actually ended up getting one dollar more....I made the guy deposit $1 into my bank account for two reasons - commitment, and to make sure he had the correct account number. Being Dutch, it was a real commitment...I'm surprised he didn't ask for it back. :D

I got the money I wanted, and I have not regretted selling, even though I do miss the car still. It's pretty cool when you can honestly tell people that the guy who bought your car had to sell a house to raise the cash. :lol:

Back in late 2007, just before I sold my house in Rancho Murieta
before I moved up here
I sold my last ol' Silver & Black 68 RR RM23
that'd run 9.77 @ 135 NA & 8.58 @156 on a 300 shot
to a buddy that wanted it bad, he didn't want to build it himself
he wanted on sorted & already done
, no real interior, alum. panels etc.
a couple race seats & a 6pt roll-bar 3520#'s (illegal for it's speed/et)
near bald 315/60 M/T drag radials,
it was more a racecar with license plates,
raced quit a bit, street driven on weekends, a tad bit rough,
but that's exactly what he wanted

he said;
how much ?

I said;
with conditions $28k today, $30k tomorrow, $32k the next day after that
& I keep the A12 6bbl lift off hood mounts etc. & the 6bbl carb combo
(I spayed the other hood flap black, gave him the hood & hinges from my other 68 RR)
& put on the Dominator single 4bbl, with N2O, hooked back up
air-cleaner wouldn't fit, but he knew that already,
needed a drop base to fit the 3" x 14" K&N element under a stock hood

he said;
I'll be back within an hr, with the cash

I said;
OK reluctantly, you called my bluff
I didn't think you'd step up

(I had maybe $20k in the whole car over 8-10 years
& I had my current 68 RR RM23, waiting in line to be built)

he was back in about an 1 & 1/2, with his trailer & all the cash
he even bought some other parts I had, to put on another project I had

I was $30k richer that afternoon

I still have a little sellers remorse,
but he got a good deal & I got what I asked for

Not to get off topic but I thought you bought your car from a dealership?
It was for sale at a dealership by the owner on a consignment deal, he then decided he didn't want to sell and took it back home. Years later I bought it.

Most keep pushing after I say it's not for sale and when I give an unrealistic number, they will scoff and say really!?
A friend of mine had his '69 Road Runner at a show in Kentucky and a local cop bothered him all weekend. He finally through him a ridiculous price (he never told me what it was) and the guy took it. Not sure how he got back home.

If the price was ridiculous.....not a problem gettin home lol

Nine out of ten people that want to buy the car have no idea as to the real market value these days. THeyre always much lower than what the car is worth. So yeah it is annoying and flattering at the same time. I just say make me a market value based offer and they don’t know how to respond. They just say nice car and walk away.

That's kind of how I try to respond as well. Its just weird because the last two people that asked me would not take no for an answer even after I told them no and its sentimental.

If it was ridiculous enough we would have stopped at a bar, drinks on me and took a cab home!!

Thats why the dead uncle works. Would love to sell it. Stick your head in hear and take a whiff. They usually turn and walk away.
