I'm pretty sure that's what is on the front of the GTO, and used to be on the rear. Once I had over a year of experience with my Toyo Proxes TQ drag radials on the Roadrunner, and have confidence that rain or wet streets aren't an invitation for the Grim Reaper to ride shotgun (like the Nitto 555R drag radials, that could have KILLED me in my Conquest TSi in a light rain, w/good tread) I got a pair of 275/17 Toyo Proxes TQ drag radials for the GTO.
They are still a long, long way from a drag tire.

You could also use one of the many brands of drag radials, and not have to bother changing wheels, but they won't last long driven on the street constantly.
Probably true, BUT with the limited mileage on my Roadrunner and the GTO, the tread life on the Toyo Proxes TQ drag radials has been great. Mine are still good and over 3 years old!
 
well after multiple people telling me to leave the pinion angle guess I will . hahah

will just have to increase my search for a set of better tires !
 
I read this whole thread and I'm almost embarrassed of my setup. I plan on sticking with leaf springs, too. You guys will likely be hearing my stories and answering my questions in the future!

I was just gonna swing in and say sticky tires are a must! I'm not sure if you're shooting for drag radials or slicks. I'm no pro racer, but I have some experience with drag radials and they're not all created equal! I haven't tried any manufacturer's bias-ply performance tires.

I have some old BFG G-Force T/A's that would grab on gritty street, but those drag radials have been long discontinued.

Nitto NT555R's rip compared to a street tire, but I think the rubber compound is too hard for heavy cars and big torque. Unless you have good weight transfer or power brought on softly, they only seemed to hook on a perfectly prepped track (for me).

Mickey Thompson's softer compounds seem to grab mighty good, only gripe is the lack of tread on the newest renditions. You know, in case you get stuck in the rain after a cruise or something.

I plan on trying M&H's next. They look good on paper, we'll find out. Do your research and take your pick. :thumbsup:
 
Roaster, sure agree the different tires will work different for different applications. My BFG DOT Drag Radials worked great, both street & strip at the 500-550 HP level. They were very marginal in even in a light rain on the street. I'll see how my new M&H's work on the street. I use slicks at the track.
