My mail Gopher doesn't look like that and he never will. (stepson)
Years ago, I put reflective markers and tape on our boxes/post and that did reduce the number of times it got damaged. Still, a year can’t go by without it getting hit at least once. No idea if it’s dipshits with bats doing it or not. Sometimes there would be broken car parts lying by it. Last time no debris; but the slip-pin takes a good amount of force to shear it. It’s an old setup rusting away so will need to rebuild the whole thing. Thinking of welding steel barriers, like walls on each side of the boxes, that would certainly be a nasty thing to hit with a bat.My first house was on a rural lane and my mailbox got smashed multiple times.. I became very tired of spending 1/2 of my weekend repairing or replacing it..
What I did was take a regular sized metal mailbox ( quonset hut style) set it inside the largest mailbox I could find, then I filled the entire Large mailbox with concrete, leaving the small one completely wrapped in concrete.. Then I set it on a metal pipe concreted in the ground and I filled the pipe with concrete too...
While I did worry about someone getting killed in there car if they hit it, the sheeit eating grin on my face when I found bat marks on it, hoping the bat had rebounded back in the pecker heads face or smashed up their car, made my day....
I never had to repair or replace that box again while I lived there....
Back in da 60's in our subdivision, someone or group was going around putting M-80's in boxes...they did some damage...I saw many a mailbox smashed up when I lived in Dutchess Cty. (Dopey bored kids on dark mountain roads?) Watched an ongoing battle between a neighbor and what I assumed was the same punkass perpetrator. He came up with method after method to protect his mailbox, all defeated.
He finally constructed something very similar to what joe smith described above but he encased the entire thing in cinder block and mortar. I saw it one morning going to work and thought "good for you dude" but what a shame having to go through all that.
Next morning I passed by again ...
