I need some advice from the tranny gurus. When I got my '72 Satellite, I had numerous leaks and one of them was the tranny, due to the pan bolts being loose. It was overfilled by the previous PO, so I removed some fluid and after tightening the pan bolts, it is leak free and shifts well. My question is, would it be a good idea to change the filter, fluid and pan gasket? I had a transmission mechanic tell me that servicing the transmission could cause problems if it hasn't been done regularly. I certainly don't want to cause a problem but I also want to keep my tranny in good condition. Thoughts? Any info appreciated.

Whats the fluid look like? Cherry red or burnt and black? You really only run into problems with then latter. And then changing the fluid only speeds up the inevitable. If the fluid looks ok and smells ok go for it. That way you can start a maintenance log.
