My friends 70 GTX which lost that cam and I swapped engines has an issue of the Sniper screen turning red with "no data" on every part of the dashboard. When it does this it just dumps fuel like the injectors are wide open. It was so bad that it overfilled the oil pan with gas. even Hydro locked the engine.

I drained the oil pan, changed the oil and pulled some plugs turned it over. So upon googling I found a video on Youtube that describes this very well. Apparently I'm sending back a Sniper unit, something is wrong internally or a bad board.

Now here is where I get to thinking. When he lost that cam he said it backfired and popped and then shut down. I am wondering if the Sniper/Fuel dump thinned the oil and caused it to wipe the cam? I assume fuel in an oil pan would evaporate over time and maybe the oil would smell a little gassy. Anyhow below is a video that explains this perfectly.

Interesting stuff. I know people that get along fine with the sniper, but a friend has fried two expensive race engines at the track running lean with a sniper.

I think I will go give a carburetor a hug. :poke:

I also wiped the software from the SD card, updated it to the latest versions for the hand held as well as the ECU. At first it fired up and ran good. 2 seconds later as he was driving it, went red again and started dumping fuel. Quickly pulled the fuel pump fuse and stopped it from dumping fuel. Something is definitely wrong with the Sniper. I used the same exact software version on the Road Runner and its totally fine. As a matter of fact once I installed the new 440 into the guys engine I initially installed the sniper. It fired up weird and ran like ****. So I pulled the Sniper and installed the edelbrock carb back on and changed the fuel sender back to the old one. Then re-installed the mechanical pump and put it back like it should be.

I'm not knocking the Sniper's for the most part they have been trouble free. I think this one is just a dud and should be replaced along with the cam it wiped. :) ... I also don't knock the carb stuff either. I mean for god sakes they have been running carbs for an eternity so they just work. I'm not on either side of the fence on this I just believe that sometimes you get a Friday made part and sometimes you get a Monday part. I am an electrician hell, I've gotten 4 boxes of switches from my supply house and 2 boxes "20 switches" were bad and didn't work brand new... So I realize it happens. They just need to remedy the situation.

I wonder if he has shielded cables where needed? I heard of some minor issues with unshielded cables and Snipers. Nothing like that though.

Watch the video above. Makes no difference.

69 GTX 440. Interesting thinking of installing the sniper also. Any suggestions.??

Just bought a whole kit yesterday !! However, it seems no matter what it is. without NASA-type triple redundancy, some people are going to have to have a problem with the product no matter what it is. Keeping my fingers crossed. Won't be installing it for about another year.

I think the Hoy Sniper is a great choice. FASTMAN probably has more Dyno time than anybody on all types of EFi and he claims anything under 1000 Hp the sniper is all that is needed unless you’re just a full time racer then Direct Injection would be a go to and over 1000hp. The only thing he really recommended me to do was to ground the sniper itself. I’m thinking most RFi interference were with FORDS. Now I’ve heard that some interference problems could be caused by a built in voltage regulator in the alternators which I don’t run. I think Andy F has had good luck running the Snipers also as many people other people have to.

No matter how good a product is, there will be issues occaisionally. The sniper is an excellent unit for its intended purpose of replacing a carb. I am a Holley EFI dealer and have been to their efi dealer training quite a few times, and each time I pick up another piece of knowledge that lets me do even more cool stuff with their systems.

I'm not a hater of Holley Snipers by any means. I have installed at least 6 of them on various engines and types... There were only 3 issues on all 6 installs. One was the 02 sensor went bad. And another o2 sensor went bad on a different car. And this latest debacle with the bad ECU. So mostly just odd issues. I replaced the Holley 02 with a Bosch 02 sensor and no issues since.

Update to my original post: JJ took the GTX to the local MLK day parade and ran the 45 minute route with no further issues. So either the software update fixed it of whatever weird *** bug worked itself out. He said it ran great.

If you do want to install it The master install kit comes with everything you need. However the fuel pump and filters are mounted under the car and are quite loud. I would suggest not buying the master kit and buy the in tank fuel pump. With this in tank sender you do not need to run a return line. Holley says you can just hook up the feed side to the Sniper. No need for a return line. Which if any of you guys know is a pain in the *** to route on a unibody car. Unless you do steel lines and follow the fuel line route. Otherwise you have to use the 20 feet of hose and route that bulky crap front to back.

Here is the b body in tank pump.

I’ve had Bosch O2 sensors that failed with my Innovative set ups. Brand new T-56 with 100 miles on it started leaking, new Billet flywheel spun the ring gear, I mean I could go on and on. Do they make **** that actually works anymore without some kind of failure before you even get a few miles on it?

I have had 2 Holley 02 sensors take a crap. I found the Bosch sensors because they were a 3rd of the price to replace a Holley branded 02 sensor. I'm not saying they are a great alternative but they are still alive. So I guess thats saying something. However one of the Holley branded was replaced under warranty.

Holley sensors are bosch or NTK. Only bosch for the Sniper. Yes, if you figure out what car they came on from the factory, you can buy them over the counter and save the mark up.

After researching all weekend I pulled the trigger on the intank setup you mentioned. Ordered the black sniper and In tank pump. Anyone do the oil pressure sensor or is it not needed. 440.

I have not done an oil pressure on any I've installed. Not sure it supports that. I'd have to look into it further. I know the supplemental harness can do fans and other things Just not sure it can read a oil pressure sensor.

Here is an entire topic related to reading a oil pressure sender. It looks like its not possible unless you use a Holley Digital dash.
