LAKE COUNTY, Ind. -

A driver was arrested early Friday morning after police say he was traveling at speeds of more than twice the posted speed limit on the Indiana Toll Road.

An Indiana State Trooper was sitting stationary in his marked police cruiser around 1:31 a.m. Friday morning near the crossover on the Indiana Toll Road near the Cline Avenue exit.

The trooper saw a vehicle coming behind him in the east bound lanes at a high rate of speed. This vehicle, a 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat, was the only vehicle at that time of night traveling in both the east and west bound lanes.

The trooper activated his rear stationary radar and clocked the Challenger at 158 miles per hour in a 70 miles per hour zone. The Challenger was clocked a second time on radar at 151 miles per hour and police say the driver rapidly decreased his speed as he passed the trooper’s police car.

The police trooper caught up with the Challenger and activated his emergency lights and siren when it pulled over at the 11 mile marker. The driver was identified as 30-year-old Christopher Garza of Chicago. He was placed under arrest for reckless driving.

Garza stated that he had recently purchased the Challenger and wanted to show his two friends, who were passengers in the car, what his 707 horsepower engine could do. He stated he knew was doing 160 miles per hour and thought the Indiana Toll Road would be the safest place to do this since it was empty.

Garza was taken to the Lake County Jail for Reckless Driving and is passengers were taken to a nearby hotel. The Challenger was towed.

Good. Put his passengers at risk, himself and the trooper. Not to mention anyone else on that road.

I didn't read the part where it mentioned he was drunk and there was no actual pursuit.
Opening your car up on an empty highway at that time of night is a shitton less dangerous than what I see on my daily commute. I would also imagine his passengers were encouraging him to open it up.
I do it occasionally in the Bee but I wait until 3am...shift change for the RCMP.

My biggest concern would be hitting a deer. At that speed it would kill everybody. Opening a vehicle up around here at 3am is risky.

Did i say he was drunk? I never mentioned a "pursuit" either, obviously there was one. You drive that fast you take a big risk. Risk your own life is a personal choice. Risk another's life is not your choice. Driving that fast on a public road were anything can happen is a big risk.

why is that wrong
Its wrong because as adults people should know better. I read members here bitch about the younger ones and what they do and dont do but its ok to drive like a asshole and risk peoples lives, remember he wasn't alone. 158 MPH at 1:30 AM with two people in the car and you think thats ok?

Guess he found out what 707 horsepower could also do.....A jail trip.....

Thankfully, no.one was hurt.

Pretty sure his 2 passengers were like "hell yeah, hammer down!" from the way it's described. Everybody know why people buy cars like Hellcats, and it's not to get get the groceries with...

No, neither you nor the article mentioned anything about alcohol being involved but as an adult this driver knew the "risk". Getting out of bed in the morning and entering the outside world is a risk. Driving at speed on an empty highway is a risk...for those involved. When you include traffic, that's where I have an issue.

He got his moneys worth. Here in Wisconsin, you go to jail for clocking anything over 100mph

ironic, one of our members gets crashed out by a reckless driver,
who totally caused an accident while speeding.
that guy did not get arrested, amirite?

yet this guy, whos trying out his wheels,Alone on the road!
gets arrested,for speeding.

sure do miss the old days.
the cops were much friendlier and easier to speak to.
and most everyone seemed to have more brains as well.

I had a couple of friends that were killed, back in the day, racing or just high speeds and loosing control in their muscle cars. It's the reason they started sanctioned drag strips, to save lives.

i was making joke with my drum brakes i dont think i ever been near 100 mile an hour .

At least he did it at night morning instead of 12:00 lunch time. I open my cars up when there's no one around no one in the car either. I usually don't have to worry about the police as they all Know me and know I would never go fast unless I knew it was safe and clear.

Went to a NeHOA meet in Pa. Told my kids to count the deer. The score 13 to 13 tie. 13 alive and 13 dead.
