Have 1968-383 block with .30 over flat-tops with 906-heads, bottom end is good BUT TOP END NEEDS replaced, I need a good Cam replacement, car is a 66 Belvedere II and used just for street but would like a nice cam .484 or 509 lift maybe, I'm not running power breaks so that is not an issue, I'm replacing CAM-LIFTERS-TIMING CAM & SPOCKET etc along with VALVE SPRINGS for correct CAM that I pick out and doing valve job on heads also, I'm running a 3000 stall with shift kit with 391 gears with Holley 850 DP

I'd run the MoPar .474 on a 110 LSA or the Isky .465 / 280 on a 108 LSA if you want a hot street car on the cheap. Either will put that car in the 13 second 1/4 mile bracket. The 850 is way too much. Trade that in on something like a 670 CFM Holley knock off and run a single plane or performer RPM. 1-7/8" headers with 2.5" duals are a must.

Yes I agree with other post, don't go over .500 in lift with a 383 you need a torque or low end cam, I ran the Purple shaft .484 in my street car with 2500 converter and 3.91's in my 70 runner pretty stock 906 heads with 5 angle valve job and just cleaned up ports with 650 vac holly and it ran low 13's at sea level and high 13's at Mile high nationals near Denver CO.

You only mention a valve job, but don't forget to replace the valve guides, install hard exhaust seats, and mill the heads to finish the job correctly.

I agree with the MP .474 cam as it would work nice with the 3000 converter and 3.91's. I used that cam in a very stock 340 years ago and that 340 ran its butt off as it worked really nice with that cam. I also agree the 850 is a bit much for it. Myself I ran a 750 DP on a mild 383 years ago and it worked very nice on my mild 383. Performer RPM will work real nice on it also. Ron

Sounds like you have a good plan going above.

69bee is right on with the head too. I have a 69 383 with pretty much same build your looking for. Make sure the heads are gone through by someone that knows what they're doing. Mine has larger valves and new hardened seats. New cam probably means new springs too. Don't use the old ones. Adjustable rockers?

Good luck

I am running the 509 cam in my 451, and it works great! Good low end, and great power all the way past 6000 RPM. That cam likes compression, gears and higher stall converter. With a 383 you may want less duration than the 509 has. Larger cubic inches can take a little more duration and still have good low end. I would stay with the .474 lift cam in your application.

What is your actual compression ratio?
